Sony's Next Generation Portable: Specs, Games and SKUs Detailed

Following yesterday's Sony Playstation Meeting where the Next Generation Portable (NGP), the Playstation Portable (PSP)'s successor was officially revealed, some more details have surfaced about the device.

Getting to know the NGP better

Hardware wise, the device measures in at 182mm x 18.6mm x 83.55mm and runs a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor. The graphics is handled by a Texas Instruments SGX543MP4 processor, which is also a quad-core. Here's a full list of specs:

  • 5-inch OLED Capacitive Touchscreen at a resolution of 960x544 (PSP1 was 480x272)

The NGP was received well by gamers and developers alike and a lot of publishers came out and pledged their support to the device. The titles releasing in the launch window are as follows:

  • Uncharted: Portable (SCEA)
  • Call of Duty (Activision)
  • Killzone (SCEA)
  • Wipeout (SCEE)
  • Resistance (SCEA)
  • LittleBigPlanet (SCEE)

In addition to this, Konami, Capcom and Sega showcased the easy portability between the PS3 and the NGP by showing videos of Metal Gear Solid 4: Sons of the Patriot, Lost Planet and Yakuza 4 running on the NGP respectively. The NGP will also be backwards compatible with existing PSP games, as showcased by the demo of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd running on the device.

The Next Generation Portable will come out in three SKUs in Holiday season 2011, one with 3G connectivity and two without. Pricing has not been announced yet, but we're hoping it will be soon.
