Samsung launches commercial transparent display, LED square display

Samsung recently launched two new displays intended for commercial purposes. One of them is the NL22B, a 22-inch transparent display as part of a cube with a transparent screen, a computer for video control, an LED bar, a protective glass, and speakers. The other is the UD22B, a 21.6-inch, 1:1 ratio LED square stackable screen with a 5.5 bezel and a digital loop-out. The displays will be available in September this year, reports The Verge.

The NL22B comes with a built-in PC, and a transparent display with a resolution of 1,680 x 1,050 pixels. It is available as an all-in-one showcase. It allows images and animations to interact with the products showcased inside the cube. This is done through a thin LCD panel mounted on the front of the transparent display. As demonstrated in a video, it is possible to see through the screen and clearly figure out the objects inside the cube while images and animations are played on the LCD. The built-in PC runs on an AMD A4-3310M Dual-Core processor and comes with a media player and MagicInfo Premium software. Samsung claims that the transparent display offers a transmittance rate of 15 percent, “unlike competitive displays with lower transmittance rates (5 percent) that can hide merchandise”.

Samsung claims that the UD22B lets commercial users “explore limitless possibilities” as it supports "unlimited" configurations. It can apparently be used for constructing video walls and other structures of the sort to display a single image across up to 100 screens. Moreover, Samsung states that its 5.5 mm bezel is intended for easy installation.

To commemorate the displays’ September launch, Samsung will hold a product showcase at IFA 2012, which is scheduled to be held from August 31 to September 5 in Berlin, Germany.

Earlier this year, Samsung announced that it would be expanding its transparent display market with the production of a 46-inch transparent LCD panel, beginning this month. Younghwan Park, Senior Vice President of LCD Marketing, Device Solutions, Samsung Electronics, said, “Transparent panels, an exciting application of next-generation display technology, have unlimited potential to change our viewing habits over the next several years. As a strong supporter of the transparent display market, Samsung plans to develop this technology into a new growth engine for our LCD business”.

Samsung’s 46-inch transparent LCD panel features a contrast ratio of 4,500:1 with HD (1,366x768) resolution and 70 percent colour gamut of the NTSC spectrum. These specialised LCD panels are being produced for a wide variety of retail display applications, such as product showcases, commercial freezer doors and platform doors of subway stations in North America, Europe and Asia. It will also be used in other applications such as e-boards, information windows, medical equipment, e-signage, and mobile devices.
