As of today, between the upcoming flagship smartphones that are yet to be announced, we have the iPhone 8 or iPhone X on one side and the Samsung Galaxy S8 on the other. While there is enough speculation and news about both of these flagships, there is indeed more evidence of the Galaxy S8's existence thanks to the number of leaked images so far. Today, there's one more piece of the puzzle that has been unveiled and this is to do with its chipset and its performance.
According to the leaked benchmark video, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 flagship thrashes current day flagship devices from competitors with a brand new high score of 205,248 points. The reigning king which was the iPhone 7 came in at 181,807 points last year thanks to its impressive A10 Fusion chipset.
Indeed, this is a leak that comes via a video grab of the same test. But a jump of about 25,000 points from the current competition may not be that much of a big deal.
This is because Apple, similar to last year, may have a new chipset in store. And if things turn out to be a shocker like last year, the new chip may take a much larger leap in the range of 30,000-40,000 points over the current competition.
It is also important to note that we are comparing a top-of-the-line chipset from 2017 to a 2016 flagship. Still then, synthetic benchmarks should be taken with a pinch of salt, as they are not a definite indicator of real life performance, but give an idea of the performance capabilities of the device.
From what we know, the Galaxy S8 will need plenty of it. Plenty of horsepower would be needed for an expected desktop mode, where the smartphone similar to Microsoft's Continuum would provide a tablet like experience when connected to a monitor and keyboard via a dock.
The second reason is that the S8 is also expected to pack in 1000fps slow motion video. The current leader when it comes to this feature is the recently announced Sony Xperia XZ Premium, that shoots super slow motion video at 960fps thanks to its new Motion Eye camera.
Samsung's upcoming chipsets will be developed using 10nm process that is expected to bring down power requirements while increasing battery life and delivering better performance. Both the Samsung Exynos 8895 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 will be manufactured using the 10nm process.
