There’s no doubt that the Samsung Galaxy S4 brings some cutting-edge hardware, but most of Samsung’s new TouchWiz features have been written off as gimmicky. In any case, Galaxy S4 users will at least be getting a first hand experience of the deep TripAdvisor integration in the smartphone.
Samsung normally reserves one top app exclusively for its flagship smartphone. Last year, it was Flipboard, which debuted on Android on the Galaxy S3. This time around Samsung has gone for an exclusive deal with TripAdvisor. Now, the popular travel website does have a great looking Android app, but things have been taken up a notch for the Galaxy S4.
The new TripAdvisor widget on the Galaxy S4
The app will be pre-installed on the new Samsung Galaxy S 4, but more importantly, it brings deep integration with other core functions of the phone. In addition to the app, Samsung is using TripAdvisor content, i.e. millions of photos and over 100 million reviews and opinions to populate its own travel app. These include the Travel Widget, Lock Screen Slideshow and City Information.
The Travel Widget will showcase TripAdvisor images of popular travel destinations and attractions around the world. Users can save places to their "Saves" list on TripAdvisor, or get more information for a particular image, including the whole gamut of TripAdvisor reviews, opinions, photos and contact information. Lock Screen Slideshow is pretty self-explanatory and is a great way to show off the Galaxy S4’s 1080p display. City Information is part of the Samsung Story Album feature in the Gallery app. This helps users build a more immersive photo experience by pulling in travel content matching the travel photos in any Story Album.
In addition, TripAdvisor has added exclusive features to its application. Users can now enable the Single Sign-On option and use TripAdvisor’s app with a Samsung ID. They also have the ability to integrating details of hotels and flights from TripAdvisor into the phone’s Calendar app. Moreover, they can get contact information for a hotel, restaurant or any city attraction to the Galaxy S4’s Contacts list.
“We are delighted to be partnering with Samsung to preload the TripAdvisor mobile app on the new Samsung Galaxy S4,” said Steve Kaufer, CEO and co-founder of TripAdvisor. “The combination of more than 100 million TripAdvisor traveller reviews and opinions with our inspirational travel photos on the latest Samsung device will provide a perfect companion for modern travellers.”
“We wanted to ensure that Samsung Galaxy S4 users can access up-to-date inspirational travel destinations, photos and insights,” says Chanwoo Park, Vice President, Product Strategy Team, Samsung. “We are excited about our global partnership with TripAdvisor to fulfil our customers’ unmet needs and their enriched mobile experiences.”
