Samsung Galaxy S Plus I9001 up for pre-order on Flipkart

Following the huge success of the Galaxy S, Samsung decided to make their popular phone even better by launching the Galaxy S Plus. The phone is finally up for pre-order on Flipkart, so expect an official announcement any day now. The S Plus is not a new phone, but simply a speed bump of the existing Galaxy S. Samsung has done away with their Hummingbird chipset, which ran at 1GHz and swapped it for a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor. The battery is also bumped up to 1650mAh from 1500mAh to compensate for the faster CPU. The Galaxy S currently retails for 20K, so 2.5K more for a larger battery and speedier internals seems fair. One thing to note is that the S Plus has just 8GB of built-in storage compared to 16GB on the S. For those who already have a Galaxy S, it doesn't make sense to upgrade, instead we recommend you wait for the Galaxy R, which is also on the way. For first time buyers though, the S Plus looks like a great buy, as it's the fastest single core Android phone in that price range.

Featurewise, both the phones are pretty much identical. The S Plus features the same Super AMOLED 4-inch screen and 5MP camera capable of 720p video recording. It will still feature the older TouchWiz UI and not 4.0 as seen on the Galaxy S II. Finally, it will come with Gingerbread 2.3 out-of-the box and support Wi-Fi ‘n’ and Bluetooth v3.0. The following are some of the highlights of the phone:

  • 4.0-inch capacitive touchscreen with 480 x 800 pixel resolution
  • 3G, EDGE/GPRS, Wi-Fi
  • GPS with A-GPS support
  • Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP, USB 2.0
  • 5 megapixel camera
  • Memory expandable up to 32GB via microSD card
  • 3.5 mm handsfree socket
