Samsung Announces Rugged SD and MicroSD Memory Cards

I think it’s safe to say that we’re constantly looking for the best deals and value in the external memory market. Since all of us are not users of Apple devices or WP7 handsets that come with a fixed amount of in-built memory, it’s necessary for to be equipped with external support using today’s standards of MicroSD or normal SD cards. While there are plenty of companies that are into memory card manufacturing Samsung has joined the fray with an all new line of premium but rugged cards.

What Samsung means when they say “rugged” is that these cards are water-proof, magnet proof and dust proof. They’ll also be able to withstand temperatures varying from 85C to -40C. The series that have been launched by Samsung will fall under two distinct categories namely - Essential and Plus. The categories are created based on the cards’ capabilities of write speed, Class (Class 4 for Essential and Class 6 for Plus) and limited warranty.

These new SD and MicroSD cards will be available in 4GB to 16GB capacities. These cards should be able to reach speeds of up to 17MB/s and a write speed of up to 13MB/s which is quite impressive.

There’s no word on pricing yet and initially the cards will be launched only in their home base of Korea but there’s every possibility they’d make it here as well. Where else is it as dusty or wet at various times of the year.
