Plants vs Zombies 2 coming on June 18 exclusively for iOS devices

PopCap Games has announced the release date for its upcoming tower-defense game—Plants vs Zombies 2: It's About Time. The game will be exclusive to iOS devices on release, and PopCap hasn't indicated plans to release it on other platforms yet. The game will be available on the iTunes App Store on June 18 and it will be a free-to-play game fueled by microtransactions.

Plants vs Zombies 2 continues the epic struggle of the plants defending your brains against the zombie invasion in your backyard. The game will be taking a fantastical turn by having levels set in different eras, both in the past and in the future. There will be new levels, new plants and new zombies. More will be added later as the developers continue to make content for the game.

Since Plants vs Zombies 2 is being developed from the ground up for touch-based devices, the game will feature new touchscreen-based power-ups that allow players to interact with both the plants as well as the zombies directly.

Also returning for the sequel is Crazy Dave, the addled neighbor who serves as a guide for players and shopkeeper for special plant upgrades and other tools and weapons. New touchscreen power-ups, plant food that supercharges plants and new game mechanics that both help and hinder players’ efforts to thwart the zombie hordes will enthrall existing fans and new players alike.

Owing to its free-to-play nature, players will be able to purchase upgrades and other in-game items through in-app purchases. However, the company has pointed out that players can still face every zombie and access every level in every world at no cost.
