Nokia’s 6-inch Lumia 1520 with 20MP camera and Snapdragon 800 is official

Nokia took the wraps off its latest smartphone and arguably the first Windows Phone phablet, the Lumia 1520, at the Nokia world event at Abu Dhabi.

The 6-inch phone has a full 1080p full HD display,  the first one seen in the Lumia series. The device comes with a 20-megapixel PureView camera, as well as a new Nokia Camera app, which was demoed extensively on stage.

Much like the other phones in the Lumia series, the polycarbonate shell of the phone will come in a multitude of colours. The phone runs on the latest Windows Phone OS with the GDR3 update. This has added a third column to the Live Tiles feature on the Lumia device. The third column will definitely help users to see and do more on the larger screen. One of the key points that the company focused on was the presence of four built-in microphones, for better audio capture.

The hardware running this beast is quite beefy. The 1520 runs on a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC and comes with 32GB of internal memory that can be expanded up to 64GB via a microSD slot. Like every other Lumia phone we have seen of late, the camera will be the key highlight of the 1520 as well, with Nokia throwing in every feature save the kitchen sink into the app. Honestly, we felt taking a picture using the app was a task in itself, looking at the demo on stage.

It will be priced at around $749 (Rs 46,190 approx) and will be available in yellow, white, black and glossy red avatars. The company has said that the new device will be fourth quarter of 2013 and will start rolling out in Hong Kong, Singapore, US, China, U.K., France, Germany, Finland and other European markets. While Nokia has said that the new phabet will soon be seen in other markets, there is still no word on when that will happen or when the 1520 will be expected to hit India.
