Nintendo's upcoming handheld gaming console, the 3DS, will be region locked. The news doesn’t come as a surprise considering the fact Nintendo’s previous console, the DSi was as well, but it’s still a massive disappointment for those who were hoping to import titles for the console.
The news broke through an e-mail from Nintendo Support JP that essentially read “There are no region codes on the DS and DSlite. However, DSi, DSiLL and 3DS have region codes. The region codes are installed in the games and in the hardware itself. If the codes don’t match, you can’t play the game. For example, if you try to play a Korean 3DS game with a Japanese 3DS (or vice-versa), you won’t be able to play at all.”
I for one am gutted about this development. I want my wacky Japanese games and my JRPGs, so this puts a massive dent in my plans. This also deters those who were planning to buy a PAL console and import games from the US thanks to the timely releases.
