We heard about the rumours of the Sony Next Generation Portable’s pricing, and now there are reports on the software side of things. It seems that Digital Download versions of games will be available simultaneously from Day One.
Will get downloadable goodness sooner
In an interview with MCV, SCEE President Andrew House mentions the new distribution strategy and this is what he had to say.
“One thing we learnt from PSP, is that we want to have simultaneous delivery in digital and physical for NGP. Just to clarify that, all games that appear physically will be made available digitally. Not necessarily all games have to be made available physically. And having the option of a digital-only method affords more creative risk-taking, and that’s because you don’t-have that in-built risk of physical inventory.”
He also talks about game hierarchy and the advantages of a strong digital distribution channel. The big name games are more likely to be of a larger size, and therefore will be purchased mostly via retail. However, there are more chances of smaller titles being downloaded, which will help save money on physical copies and allow developers a bit more freedom in what they do.
Let’s just see how it goes.
