New Porsche 911s to Use KERS Across the Entire Lineup

Fast cars are one of the things we love in the Tech2 office. We often descend into arguments as to which car we will buy once we become millionaires and why one manufacturer is better than the other.

One car which we all want is the Porsche 911. They are fast (duh), practical and are always loaded with tech which would make gadget geeks like us happy. Now, according to Autoblog, the next generation of Porsche 911s will have KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) built into the car. Yes, this is the same technology which was introduced in Formula 1 back in 2009, banned by the FIA in 2010 citing unfair advantage and has now returned for the 2011 season.

For those who are unaware of what KERS does, the Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) is an automotive system which stores the kinetic energy of a moving vehicle which is gained during braking. This energy is stored in either a small battery or a flywheel.

Autoblog also adds that “The chief giveaway that Porsche is definitely planning the KERS strategy is the added wheelbase length of four whole inches together with added vehicle length of 2.75-inches. Just the right amount of distance for incorporating the new flywheel technology between the gearbox and engine”.


What we need to see know is how much of a difference the KERS system makes to the 0-100kmph times as well other inclusions that new 911s will have which Porsche is still keeping under wraps.
