More Nokia Lumias than iPhones shipped in first three quarters after launch

In what comes as encouraging news to both Nokia and Microsoft, Lumia smartphones running on Microsoft OS have outshipped the likes of iPhone by Apple and Samsung's Androids, in the first three quarters after their respective commercial launches. The findings come at the end of a research by Strategy Analytics' Wireless Smartphone Strategies (WSS) service. As per the estimates put forth by the report, Finnish company, Nokia shipped 6.9 million Lumia smartphones with the Microsoft Windows Phone operating system worldwide, from Q4 2011 to Q2 2012. This number put against the 3.7 million units that Apple shipped of its iPhone in its first three quarters during 2007, and 1.3 million units that Samsung did in its first three quarters during 2009 weighs heavy.

Nokia's big comeback

Surging ahead..

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “Based on historical shipment benchmarks, Nokia’s new Lumia portfolio is performing reasonably well. Some of the pessimism surrounding Nokia and Microsoft’s emerging partnership so far may be misplaced. However, Nokia and Microsoft are clearly not out of the woods yet. With a new Apple iPhone 5 expected on the horizon, and Samsung’s Galaxy S3 selling in huge quantities, Nokia will need to pull something impressive out of the bag for the next-generation Windows Phone 8 launch later this year to sustain its tentative early momentum.”

The Nokia Lumias have emerged as a fairly popular line of smartphones in the market today. One of the popular Lumia handsets, is the Lumia 900 running WP7.5 (Mango), and it features a 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor. The Lumia 900 sports a 4.3-inch AMOLED ClearBlack Display. The Lumia 800 is another one of the Lumias in the market currently. The Nokia Lumia 800, dubbed the first real Windows Phone has been turning heads, ever since it was launched in October. The Lumia 800 sports a 3.7-inch ClearBlack display from Nokia. The main attractions of this handset lies in the feel and build quality of the phone. The Nokia Lumia 610 is fuelled by an 800 MHz single core processor. It sports a 5 MP camera, and a 3.7-inch LCD display. The Lumia 710 features Windows Phone 7.5 Mango and a 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It comes with 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen display, and a 5MP camera.

Early in January, we had reported about Nokia shipping a million units of  Lumia 800 in the Q4 of 2011. The estimated figures were put forth by research firm Morgan Stanley. Nokia, however has to play the wait-and-watch game as the launch Apple's iPhone 5 is just around the corner, and Samsung's newest S III smartphone is still new in the market.
