Mobile Gaming Takes on New Levels of Interaction

The mobile gaming experience is about to get a serious upgrade, at least that’s what two developers from Canada’s Human Media Lab seem to think. They’ve developed what can only be construed to be a wholly interactive mobile gaming experience but one that isn’t necessarily very mobile or personal. Zi Ye and Hammad Khalid, the designers of this system they’ve dubbed ‘Cobra’ aim at re-inventing mobile gaming using a portable mini computer and pic projector. There’s a whole lot more to this though. The interaction between the gamer, the game and the computer will flow through a flexible, sensor loaded sheet that will double up as a display and joystick.

According to the reports, the system with the help of three infrared LEDs that mounted on the display and are tracked by a camera housed with the projector. The back of the screen is criss-crossed with flex-sensing wires that captures information on how the ‘display’ is being handled and sends them back to the computer to interpret movements etc. The flexible screen can be shaken, bent or twisted depending on the game to produce actions – bending a portion back could be a way to reload a gun or pull back the string on a Bow and arrow.

Cobra is still in a prototype phase as a concept but it has quite a bit of potential as developers are experimenting with new ways to interact with computers, games and other aspects of the virtual world.
