In a strange incident, hackers found their way into the customer database of the popular restaurant chain, McDonald’s. They couldn’t get their hands on any sensitive data like social security numbers or even credit card numbers, but they had access to other details such as name, age and contact information of the customer.
McDonald’s came to know about this through their business partners, Arc Worldwide. The data that was available in McDonald’s websites and other promotional events were accessed through an e-mail database management firm’s computers. To put things in place, Arc has retained services of that firm.
McDonald’s and Arc are co-operating with law authorities while investigations regarding the incident are taking place. McDonald’s have attempted to inform all their customers who have provided them with information “voluntarily”. They don’t have a clue as to how the system was breached, but are working with Arc to understand it.
Although the information was not very sensitive, a “hack attack” could always have a motive. It’s always advisable to take a lot of care and discretion while parting with personal details.
