A host of rumours have indicated that Samsung was working on a 64GB version of the Galaxy S III smartphone, and a Sapphire Black version of the device was speculated to be released soon. From listings on certain foreign online retailers, this 64GB version of the smartphone has been taken off the "coming soon" status. It has now become officially available through retail channels such as ePrice. This model is available in the recently announced Sapphire Black version, and is available for purchase for Euro 798.99 (approximately Rs 54,000).
As per a report by Engadget, “It looks like Samsung is making good on its promise to produce a 64GB Galaxy S III in the second half of the year, but it's going to be a lottery on if you can get one. Rather than releasing the handset worldwide, it's picking and choosing the regions which will get the benefit of the capaciously endowed smartphone.”
64GB Sapphire Black version up for grabs
This indicates that the handset may not be as far reaching across the globe as the other storage capacities currently available the world over.
As per the statement issued by Samsung, the Korean smartphone manufacturer has said, “The 64GB model of the GALAXY S III will be available during the second half of this year. The market availability and timing may vary and will be determined at the time of release.”
The 64GB Samsung Galaxy S III came to light when UK retailer Expansys started cancelling pre-orders of the product. This prompted a number of websites to query the fact that since the handset comes with a microSD card slot for expanding the available storage, Samsung may have thought it best to shelve plans for unveiling a 64GB model.
The names of the countries that will be greeted by the 64GB version of the Samsung Galaxy S III are not known yet. However, India should get this handset, as Samsung has a vast user base in India, and this handset in particular is faring well in the market. Another reason why Samsung may launch this variant of the Samsung Galaxy S III in India is because Apple has been selling the 64GB iPhone 4S in India. So, to further cement itself as a dominant force in the smartphone sector, and to battle the competition from Apple, there is a strong likelihood that it will be launched here.
