USB 3.0 has been the exciting new revision of the Universal Serial Bus, where you can transfer files at lightning speeds. Kingston has launched the HyperX External USB 3.0 drive, which as the name suggests incorporates USB 3.0 for faster file transfer. In case you don’t have USB 3.0 ports, there’s nothing to worry about as it's backward compatible, so it works with USB 2.0 as well.
The external drive clocks a read speed of up to 195MB/sec., and a write speed of up to 160MB/sec., when paired with a USB 3.0 compatible device. They’ve done some testing and found that a 10GB movie file was transferred in 1 minute, 12 seconds to the HyperX MAX 3.0 from a USB 3.0 system. The transfer time increased to 5 minutes, 52 seconds using a USB 2.0 port with the same testing rig.
As it is flash-based, it doesn’t have any moving parts, and can take a bit of physical damage. It’s got Dual LED to show you which system you’re connected to, blue for USB 3.0 and green for USB 2.0. It has a big appetite with 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB varieties of the HyperX Max. It comes with a 3 year warranty but the price is yet to be announced.
Super fast speeds are something that we want to see, first hand! We’re waiting for a review piece for sure!
