iOS 5 Already Jailbroken

Not that it’s altogether very surprising really, but the latest news about iOS 5 is that it has already been jailbroken. It’s been no more than a couple of weeks since, it was officially announced at WWDC 2011 and teams were hard at work ‘cracking the code’. A developer team called MuscleNerd has wrestled the odds and come up with a jailbreak for Apple’s latest operating system for the iPod touch, iPhone and iPad.

Breaking the barrier, but through a tether

Breaking the barrier, but through a tether

While Apple might have lost the battle, they have won the war, well kind of. The Cupertino company has fixed the ndrv_setspec () integer overflow issue and this means that every time you want to reboot your iPhone, you’ll have to let it dangle from a nearby PC or laptop, so that the jailbreaking happens.

Now the other news doing the rounds is that the tethered jailbreak works simply because that has to be fixed at the hardware level. So all the current devices launched by Apple can be jailbroken through tethering. However, once the next generation iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 comes out, chances are that you won’t be able to do so. But then, you cannot simply rule out the ever-so-brilliant crack developer teams, can you? They will come up with something for that as well.
