Happy Foursquare Day! Where are you going to earn your Swarm Badge today?

What day is it today? You get marks for saying it’s a Tuesday, but bonus ones if you tell us it’s Foursquare Day! April 16 is celebrated as #4sqDay all over the world with users of the service meeting up at a common place to unlock rare badges.

Why today of all days? Well, today is April 16, which means it’s the 4th month of the year and 16 being four squared… you get the point! Today is the day where participating businesses throw their doors open to Foursquare aficionados to come in as a bunch and check-in. Being at this pre-determined location in huge numbers enables users to unlock the very special Swarm Badge.

For those not in the know, Foursquare users unlock special badges as they keep checking in to locations. These badges can be city-specific or even concentrated on the cuisine of the restaurant you are in. Besides checking-in to become the mayor of an establishment, users check-in to earn these badges.

The Swarm Badge can simply be earned by checking-in at a place that is literally swarming with Foursquare users. Once you check in with 50+ other people, you will earn this badge. While it can be earned pretty easily abroad, it gets a little difficult to earn this badge in India. Hence, there are arranged meet-ups where users can unlock this badge.

In India today, there are at least two 4SQ Day meet-ups that are about to take place. In Mumbai, Salt Water Café is hosting the #4sqDay this year. The Bandra restaurant is going to offer official swag, goodies, prizes and more to the participants. It is also going to offer discounts on food and drinks to them.

In Bangalore, the #4sqDay celebrations are being held at Blimey at 1MG Road and will have similar swag and discount deals happening in the city. You can check out the Salt Water Café and Blimey Facebook event pages for details about the meet-ups.

4SQ Day started back in 2010 and was the brainchild of Nate Bonilla-Warford, an optometrist from Tampa, Florida, who was trying to think of an idea to promote his business. Interestingly, McDonald’s was the first big brand to jump on board the $SQ Day celebrations. Foursquare users who checked in to a McDonald’s were given a chance to win gift cards. Now, cities like Istanbul, New York City, Toronto and more around the world have officially acknowledged April 16 as being Foursquare Day!
