Snapping a photo using Google Glass is now as simple as winking – literally! A developer called Mike DiGiovanni has formulated a code for the device that lets you snap a photo by simply winking. The app has been aptly named Winky and negates the need for any touch or voice command. Otherwise, one has to touch the screen of Google Glass or speak out a voice command – "Ok Glass, take a picture” – to take a snapshot.
Wink to click
DiGiovanni works with digital consulting company Roundarch Isobar. He announced this new app for the Google Glass via his Google+ page. However, the Winky app is still in labs and won’t be made available anytime soon. It is still in pure Android source code and needs to be compiled and run as an APK (application package file). Since Winky isn’t a Google approved app, DiGiovanni's GitHub site allows Google Glass owners to download the source code. On creating and running the APK, Google Glass owners simply need to calibrate and then activate the app.
"This software path is completely undocumented and unsupported at this point," DiGiovanni wrote. "I'm hoping we see a vetted out path towards native apps in the future, but battery life is so important and scarce with Glass, that might just not happen. We've seen how careless many developers can be with your battery on an Android phone. Winking lets you lifelog with little to no effort," DiGiovanni says online. "I've taken more pictures today than I have the past 5 days thanks to this. Sure, they are mostly silly, but my timeline has now truly become a timeline of where I've been."
So, next time someone wearing a Google Glass winks at you, don’t think he/she is hitting on you. Now the question arises about privacy risk – Can a Google Glass owner secretly take your pictures just by winking? Reportedly, DiGiovanni said that the app does give users warnings like a camera shutter-like sound and the Glass screen lights up once the photo is taken, according to Los Angeles Times.
Google Glass owners can download the source code here.
