Fujitsu take their smartphones global; first stop EU

Fujitsu may be big in the IT service business and have already dabbled in the mobile segment on their home turf. The recent news from the Japanese company is that their gearing up for a harder push into the smartphone arena. According to news reports making the rounds, the company is planning on unleashing a slew of smartphones into the European sector first. With approximately a fifth of the tablet and smartphone market share in Japan, Fujitsu is hoping to take on the big players now. There’s no definitive date provided for this launch of products, but according to the Financial Times, Fujitsu is targeting a “double-digit” market share in the next three to five years.

The kind of devices we could expect to see from Fujitsu could be in the higher-margin range.Their global debut will be based on technology that they have already, most likely tried and tested on the home front. Features would include the likes of biometrics being incorporated for additional security, NFC (Near Field Communication), a technology that is fast becoming quite popular would also be on the cards, along with LTE support for connectivity, that’s already being used in Japan. There's not much in terms of specs or even tentative model numbers for the devices, nor how many actual devices will be launched.

"The Japanese market has been in a silo from a technology and design perspective, but Fujitsu is bringing out a global product," Robert Pryke, the company's director for mobile phone business in Europe, was cited as saying in an article.

They’re going to have to compete quite fiercely with their Korean rivals, viz. Samsung and LG as well as the Americans bringing their big “Apple” to the playing field. Other opponents also include, ZTE and Huawei from China, HTC from Taiwan and even their Sony from their own side of the field. It’s not going to be easy especially with the European market. With MWC 2012 just around the corner, there’s a good chance we’ll see just what the Japanese have up their sleeve, however till then, details seem sketchy, at best.
