Following in the footsteps of Amazon and DMart, Flipkart is going to start selling FMCG products on its ecommerce platform from July, according to a report in the Economic Times. Amazon Pantry has cashback offers, discounts and next day delivery. Dmart specialises in the category, and so does BigBasket. Flipkart plans to provide incentives to consumers who regularly purchase from the website, through a range of schemes and offers.
FMCG is one of the top selling categories on Amazon, and Flipkart also stands to benefit from jumping into the fray. So far, Flipkart has been powering sales by depending on smartphones, apparel and large appliances. Flipkart hopes to convert occasional shoppers into regular customers by offering FMCG products and consumables. The prices are expected to be competitive and at par with other players in the segment.
In 2017, the battle between Flipkart and Amazon for capturing the emerging ecommerce market in India heated up. Microsoft, eBay and China’s Tencent have pledged a total of $1.4 billion investment in Flipkart, the largest amount that Flipkart has ever raised. Amazon, meanwhile has set aside $5 billion in investment funds for India, and has made the 1.3 billion people living in the country a strategic priority.
