Yesterday, we reported that the Amazon Kindle app for iPad was bumped up to support the new Retina Display. Now, Flipboard is getting ready to bump its iPad application up, too. According to TechCrunch, the update to the app was shipped earlier than expected. Company co-founder, Evan Doll said that the update and the support for Retina Display would lead to longer reading times on Flipboard. The company also said that with the update, "Flipboard images are more saturated and sharper, the typography is more comfortable to read and everything feels closer to a true print magazine." Evan Doll expanded on the compliments of the new app and said, "With a more pleasant Flipboard experience, easier on your eyes and more beautiful to flip through, we believe people will spend even more time reading their Flipboard." It will be interesting to see how true that statement is, if people will actually spend more time with an app because of the higher iPad resolution. One way to look at it, of course, it via the iPhone when it bumped up to Retina Display. However, given that the iPad has more screen space, even if the statement were not true for the iPhone, it could still be a possibility for the iPad.
Bumping your news up to Resolutionary
What will be interesting to see, also, is if Flipboard competitor, Zite, follows suit and bumps up. Both apps were first iPad only apps, but then Flipboard changed course and came to the iPhone as well. Zite, naturally, followed suit. When Flipboard came to the iPhone, it realigned itself in tile format. This way, users scroll up and down for their news and not left and right. Both, the iPhone and the iPad versions of Flipboard now also come with cover stories, which uses algorithms to pull up stories that are most relevant to you. There are no plans to diversify the app, yet across other mobile platforms, however, Flipboard has diversified over regions of the world. The app made its first European launch with a French edition. Furthermore, readers of Flipboard in the UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland, France, Hong Kong and Taiwan can easily access a Content Guide with hundreds of recommendations based on their language and location through the new country picker.
Flipboard for iOS is available for free from the iOS App Store.
