First Symbian^4 Handsets Should be Out in 2011

Symbian has just had a bit of an overhaul, after a long time. The resulting Symbian^3 brought quite a bit of new functionality that Nokia handsets that were missing but eagerly awaited. Features like multitouch, multiple customizable homescreen, HDMI out support, better graphics, better multitasking and much more. But that was only recently and the latest reports are already talking about Symbian^4. In fact screen shots of the upcoming update are already here.

A makeover of the traditional Symbian form, that even ^3 incorporated to an extent can be seen in ^4. So far homescreen pop up menus, widgets, 3D animations for navigation through menus, and a few more additions are noted. There’s nothing that really stands out. ^4 is going to be directed at the mid-range market though so it’s a bit like S40 while ^3 is more like S60. Symbian^4 will feature a complete Qt-based UI redesign compared to its predecessors.

Devices that will run on the new version should be out sometime in 2011.
