Dolby launches its Dolby Atmos audio platform in India

Dolby Laboratories, Inc. recently launched its new audio platform Dolby Atmos in India. Dolby states that SPI Cinemas is the first exhibitor in the country to install Dolby Atmos at Sathyam Cinemas in Chennai. Dolby claims that Dolby Atmos delivers "a more natural and realistic sound-field, which transports people into the story with a life-like, sensory experience."

SPI Cinemas stated that AVM Productions’ Sivaji, starring Rajinikanth, will be the first Indian title to be released with Dolby Atmos. The cast and crew of Sivaji 3D unveiled the first Dolby Atmos trailer of Sivaji 3D.

Kiran Reddy, CEO, Sathyam Cinemas, stated, “SPI Cinemas is proud to be the first cinema chain in India to introduce the latest groundbreaking audio technology at our flagship location, Sathyam Cinemas. This is the first of the series of Dolby Atmos installations planned at our various locations.”

According to a press communiqué, Dolby Atmos is a new audio platform that gives sound designers and mixers a new level of creative control and ensures that audiences will experience the sound mix. Dolby claims that this technology gives filmmakers greater control over the definition and placement of sounds, and is designed to help them harness the full depth and power of their creative visions.

Moviegoers will be able to experience Dolby Atmos with the premiere of Sivaji 3D. Directed by Shankar, the production is the first Indian film to be mixed in Dolby Atmos. The film opens with Dolby Atmos on December 12 at Serene screen at Sathyam Cinemas Complex.

Real Image Media Technologies is the first studio in the country to adopt mixing capabilities in Dolby Atmos. The movie has been recreated in 3D by Prasad EFX, a digital post production facility.

Dolby claims that Dolby Atmos brings a powerful new listening experience to the cinema with more natural, realistic sound that truly envelops the audience. "It is an end-to-end solution that helps mixers, studios, and distributors dramatically improve the audio experience. The Dolby Atmos platform makes it easy for content creators to create immersive soundscapes, and it ensures the best possible audience experience, regardless of theatre configuration or the number of speakers," the company stated.
