CES 2017: New line of Amazon Fire TV Edition 4K televisions double up as smarthome hubs and smart speakers

Smart TVs just got a lot smarter. Seiki, Westinghouse Electronics and Element Electronics unveiled a new line of 4K Ultra HD Smart TVs, known as the Amazon Fire TV Edition. The TVs are integrated with Amazon's artificial intelligence, Alexa and can be controlled through voice.

The TVs can also be used as a smarthome hub to control IoT connected devices such as heaters, doors, lights and connected cars. The televisions can also be used as smart speakers, similar to the Amazon Echo, Google Home, or the newly announced LG Robot Hub and Lenovo Smart Assistant.

The televisions can be used to access applications, 7,000 channels and Amazon Alexa skills, which are functionalities built into the Alexa AI. Alexa can be used for information and entertainment purposes. TV shows and movies from HBO Now, Amazon Video or Hulu can be accessed through the televisions. Amazon Prime subscribers get access to additional content, including HBO, Showtime, Starz, and PBS Kids.

Marc Whitten, vice president, Amazon Fire TV, said, "Teaming up with brands including Seiki, Westinghouse and Element on a new range of smart TVs allows Amazon to deliver an experience that's familiar and easy to use. Fire TV Edition offers access to a great selection of streaming and over-the-air TV and movies, Alexa for easy voice search and content control, and the many other features and experiences customers have come to expect from the best-selling line of Amazon Fire TV products."

The televisions are available in 43-inch, 50-inch, 55-inch and 60-inch variants. All of them are 4K Ultra HD televisions with a display resolution of 3,840 by 2,160 pixels. The televisions have 3GB memory and 16 GB internal storage. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, Ethernet and Wi-Fi. Streaming is supported at 2160p up to 60 frames per second. There is customer support along with a one year limited warranty available for all the devices.

IoT devices supported include Belkin WeMo switches, Philips Hue light bulbs, Wink switches, bulbs and security sensors, Insteon locks, lights and temperature control units, Samsung SmartThings that include appliances, switches, bulbs and security devices, Nest thermostats, smoke detectors and security alarms, TP-Link smart home router and other devices, Ecobee thermostats among other IoT devices.

The retail prices are not yet announced, the televisions are expected to be available on Amazon.com and retail outlets later in the year.
