CES 2014: Yahoo! acquires dynamic Android launcher app Aviate

At the Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas, Yahoo’s CEO Marissa Mayer has made an announcement about yet another acquisition made by the Internet company. This time, Yahoo! has picked up Aviate, the Android based homescreen.

For those not in the know, Aviate is a dynamic homescreen application that tries to show you information that you need at a particular place or time, instead of having you go through menu after menu with the aim to find it.

Adam Cahan, Senior VP of Mobile and Emerging Products at Yahoo! explained that the company aimed to make Aviate a central part of its Android based experience this year. Yahoo! admits that it has seen the launcher experience, especially on Android, being far from smart, as most time is spent running between screens, searching for apps. “We envision homescreens becoming smarter, more personalized, aware of your context. Aviate helps us bring this vision to life. Aviate auto-categorizes apps on your Android phone and intelligently gathers them into ‘spaces.’”

What Aviate does is searches for your location and tries to understand the context of your query even before you ask it, using GPS, accelerometer, time, etc. The app also changes shortcuts on your home screen according to the app you’re most likely to access at a particular time of the day. For example, if you’re in office, your home screen will show you email clients. At home in the morning, you will find links to news apps to stay ahead of the day. At night you will find reading applications and may be even games to unwind. If you’re at a particular location, Aviate will pull up recommendations for establishments around the area using Foursquare and more.

Aviate has been operating under limited beta ever since its launch last fall. Thanks to the celebratory mood at the Aviate offices thanks to the acquisition, the company is giving away access to the app by using the code “YAHOO”.

You can download the app from the Google Play Store right away and start using it.
