At over 30 Mbps, Chennai and Bengaluru offer the highest broadband speeds in India: Report

The Global speed average for fixed internet connections is 42.71 Mbps, with Singapore topping the list with an average speed of 161.53 Mbps.

**Ookla** , a web service that provides free analysis of internet speeds, has released a report on the internet speeds of fixed internet connections across various cities, states and union territories in India. According to the report, in terms of broadband speed, Karnataka is the fastest state and Chennai is the fastest city. India lies at 67th position in terms of the global average speed of fixed internet connection with an average speed of 20.72 Mbps. Representational image.[/caption] Ookla says that they took data only from states and union territories that showed results for more than 100 users in February 2018. Chennai topped the list of 20 largest cities with the highest broadband speeds by offering an average download speed of over 32.67 Mbps. The second spot was taken by Bengaluru with an average download speed of 31.09 Mbps. Patna has the lowest speed on the 20 largest cities list with an average speed of 7.80 Mbps, 62.4 percent slower than the national average of 20.72 Mbps. Nagpur, Jaipur, Kanpur and Ahmedabad join Patna at the bottom of the list. [caption id=“attachment_4388851” align=“alignnone” width=“1310”]India Speedtest graph. India Speedtest graph.[/caption] South Indian states occupy four of the five top spots in terms of reported average speeds. As far as overall states are concerned, Karnataka ranks on the top position with an average speed of 28.46 Mbps and Tamil Nadu is ranked second with an average speed of 27.94 Mbps. The report mentions that the average speed in Karnataka is 37.4 percent faster than the country average. Four of the five states and union territories with the lowest average speeds the North Eastern states of India. Mizoram has an average speed of 3.62 Mbps, almost 82.5 percent slower than the country average, whereas Manipur is on the second-last position with an average speed of 4.30 Mbps. Tripura offers 4.52 Mbps. The Global speed average for fixed internet connections is 42.71 Mbps, with Singapore topping the list with an average speed of 161.53 Mbps.
