Remember Asus’s tablet cum phone hybrid that they demoed at Computex 2011? We now have word that it will ship with Google’s next big update, Ice Cream Sandwich whenever it launches this year. The new version of Android brings some big changes with it like a unified platform for both phones and tablets which mean applications will be able to scale properly no matter the screen size. Asus’s Padfone consists of a regular Android phone which can be docked into a tablet-like device so you can use the larger screen when needed. Ice Cream Sandwich is designed to work on both types of devices which is why it's perfect timing. I don't think it would have worked well with any of the current versions of Android.
Phone or tablet? You decide
Asus has still not revealed any specifications of the Padfone yet but our guess is it will be packing a dual core processor now that every high-end handset and tablet is doing that now a days. It’s hard to say right now which product the Padfone will actually go on to compete with. Asus may have just created a niche category and depending on the success of it, we may see other manufacturers attempt something of their own. Till then, we wait for Asus to launch their ‘revolutionary’ new device and hope that all the hype pays off.
