Big plans for 2014: What is Apple CEO Tim Cook hinting at in letter to employees?

Apple CEO Tim Cook sent a holiday greeting to employees over the weekend, where he looked back at 2013, spoke about some burning issues within the company and also teased us with the company's plans for the next year.

Wearables is the future

Big plans, I tell ya!

In the memo, Cook thanked Apple employees for their hard work and talked about the products that Cupertino launched in 2013 including the iPhones - 5s and 5c (see review), iOS 7, OS X Mavericks, iPads, and the revolutionary Mac Pro. He also touched upon issues of equality and diversity at the workplace, specifically talking about protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Cook finishes the letter in tantalising fashion when talking about what to expect in 2014. “We have a lot to look forward to in 2014, including some big plans that we think customers are going to love,” Cook wrote before wrapping up the letter. So what exactly is Cook referring to when he talks about ‘big plans’? Apple is rumoured to be involved in a number of projects that could come to fruition next year. This includes the much-anticipated iWatch, which will work as a companion to your iOS devices and an enhanced fitness tracker. Apple already made a big push towards better collection of sensor data thanks to the M7 chip in the iPhone 5s. Apple also improved Bluetooth functionality in iOS and OS X in preparation for a wearable. This could be put to better use in the iWatch.

We are also expecting a revamped Apple TV product that’s said to take a front-and-centre seat in your home entertainment setup. This would leverage Apple’s iTunes partnerships and the already-existing multimedia apps from the App Store to bring a refined TV-viewing experience.

Then there’s the bi-annual iPhone refresh and the iPhone 6 with possibly have a larger display with updated internals. A bigger iPad is also said to be in the offing - it will supposedly be called the iPad Pro and have a 12-plus-inch display.

These could easily fit the big plans that Cook teased in the letter, but considering Apple’s track record of innovation, we won’t be surprised to see something else either. What do you think Apple has in store for its fans in 2014? Let us know.
