Apple has been quite predictable with the naming of its devices and has altered the product name by adding a succeeding number, in most cases. However, when Apple launched the latest generation iPad, the brand shuffled up the fold and went back to its roots and named it merely the iPad. The brand has reportedly been preparing another device and from recent Internet rumours, this new hardware from the brand will be a smaller version of the iPad. This has led many reports and publications to coin the name for the device as the iPad mini because of its diminutive form factor. If a report by Macotakara is anything to go by, then it appears that Apple may indeed name this tablet the iPad mini.
In a related report by CNET regarding the name of this upcoming tablet, the author Lance Whitney notes, “Apple's much-rumored iPad Mini will in fact be called the iPad Mini. At least, that's the latest from Apple blog site Macotakara. Citing info from an "Asian source," the Japanese site said the 7.85-inch tablet is expected to sport the familiar iPad logo on the back. If true, this means that news reports and blogs speculating about the tiny tablet actually got the name right. Apple sometimes surprises its audience with its choice of names. Those of us expecting an iPad 3 earlier this year were treated simply to the iPad or the new iPad, perhaps not the ideal name but certainly unexpected.”
To be announced under the iPad banner
There has been a lot of speculation surrounding the launch date of this tablet and a recent report has stated that Apple will host a special event in October this year to unveil the product.
A recent post by John Grubber of Daring Fireball stated that Apple would host two events in the near future -- one for the upcoming iPhone and the next for the iPad mini. He stated, “I’m thinking it makes more sense for Apple to hold two events. First, an iPhone event, focused solely on the new iPhone and iOS 6. Then, the iPhone ships nine days later, and there’s another wave of iPhone-focused attention as the reviews come out. Then, in the first or second week of October, Apple holds its traditional “music event”, exactly along the lines of the events at which they’ve been debuting new iPods for the last decade.”
Following this comment by Grubber, an article posted on AllThingsD stated that Apple will announce the iPad mini only after the next iPhone is launched. This smaller iPad, which is believed to feature a display size of 7.85-inches, will be unveiled at a special event which is currently scheduled for October.
The iPad mini is expected to feature a display of 7.85 inches and will compete directly against the Google Nexus 7, the 7-inch flagship Google tablet, which is doing really well in the market. This smaller iPad is also expected to feature a smaller dock connector and a microphone at the back. The microphone on the rear will assist the device in noise cancellation during video calls that can be done using Apple’s FaceTime or through Skype.
Let us know your thoughts on the possibility of Apple launching a smaller iPad in the near future.
