When Apple announced their latest smartphone operating system, iOS 6, a few major changes were missed from the keynote announcement. While this latest bit of information should be taken with a grain of salt, a report by AllThingsD states that Apple may be working on a dedicated application for Podcasts.
Podcasts to have its own app?
The report states that when Apple previewed the new OS to developers, a major change in the next update is that iTunes does not feature the tab for Podcasts. According to sources, the reason for this not being able to be seen is that Apple does have a surprise in store for those of us who are hooked on Podcasts by launching a dedicated app. The report states, “People familiar with Apple’s plans tell me that when its new iOS 6 software becomes widely available this fall, podcasts will have their own app, where users will be able to discover, download and play them on mobile devices. Users who access iTunes via laptop and desktop machines will still find them in that version of iTunes, though.”
This is not the first time Apple has adopted such a move and in the past have separated the iTunes app to run dedicated content. The iTunes app was divided into Music and Videos, allowing one to playback content or download that type of media directly from within the application.
Later on, Apple also built up a dedicated app for lectures called iTunes U. Commenting on these overhauls the website reports, “Last year, it broke up the iTunes player app into separate video and music apps. And when it launched iBooks in conjunction with the iPad in 2010, it made the book reader a separate app as well. The iTunes U lecture series has also gotten its own app, though you can still access the downloads through the main iTunes player on mobile devices. Apple also required iBook buyers to use the specialized app to buy their texts. But it has continued to lump all of its audio and video together in the iTunes store.”
