HTC One shipments delayed due to component shortage

Struggling smartphone maker HTC Corporation, which was counting on its HTC One device to help them make a comeback in the smartphone market, has now delayed the launch of the flagship phone.

According a report in the Wall Street Journal HTC Corp is pushing back the rollout of its new flagship smartphone due in part to some component shortages. (Subscription access only. To read report click here. )

The HTC One was expected to hit the Indian markets by April, but the phone could now get delayed further thanks to supplier issues.

The report quotes an HTC executive as saying that the company has a had a problem managing its component suppliers as HTC “changed its order forecasts drastically and frequently following last year’s unexpected slump in shipments.” The executive added that “HTC has had difficulty in securing adequate camera components as it is no longer a tier-one customer.”

HTC One has a new type of camera, where the smartphone has a 4 megapixel camera, but the company is calling it Ultrapixels. This means the HTC One’s camera has a bigger sensor than that of a regular smartphone camera, thus allowing each pixel to be bigger as the sensor allows more light, ensuring better quality shots in low light.

For HTC, 2012 was a tough year, with the company’s Q4 2012, profit falling 91 percent year on year. HTC also failed to make it to the list of top five smartphone vendors for Q4 of 2012 and was beaten by China’s Huawei and ZTE, according to IDC data .
