It seems that a fake BlackBerry Messenger app on Google’s Play Store fooled nearly 100,000 users before Google pulled the app down. According to a report in CNET, the app which called ‘blackberry messenger bbm’ had been created by a developer called RIM. Now remember RIM was the former name for the BlackBerry maker, which changed its name to BlackBerry in January with the launch of the new BB 10 phones and OS. The report states that, more than 100,000 people downloaded the app, presenting them with a screen promising the app would start working on 27 June. If that didn’t start alarm bells ringing, the app followed up with an agreement to allow advertising network StartApp to install icons, bookmarks and more on your phone. Screengrab[/caption] Previously T-Mobile had reported that the iOS and Android app for BlackBerry Messenger would be available on 27 July, but BlackBerry denied that this was the official release date. BlackBerry says that the app will be out around July and has kept the exact date under wraps. If you love downloading apps, do note that the Google Android Play Store is a wild playground, where you have to check the app developer before downloading. If you think that developer is dodgy do not download the app and inform Google. You could save others the trouble.
