Facebook’s new app centre: Why Apple should be worried

by Jun 8, 2012

Facebook today officially launched its App Center for US users with over 600 apps. The app store will be rolled out for other users in the next coming weeks. Facebook revealed some interesting facts at the launch of the App Center, showing that it was driving a significant amount of traffic to Apple’s AppStore.

According to TechCrunch Facebook’s platform sent users to Apple’s App store 83 million times last month. On top of that, it sent people back to iOS apps they had already downloaded 134 million times. Facebook was also integrated into seven of the top 10 grossing iOS apps and six of the top 10 Android apps.

Well that’s hardly a surprise since every app on either IOS and Android seems to have a log-in for users via Facebook.

Users can send apps they find on their computer to mobile device using the new “Send to Mobile” feature. If a mobile app requires a download, users will be redirected to the Apple App Store or Google Play to install the app.

TheNextWeb reports some crazy numbers on how dominant Facebook is for iOS devices.

More than 230 million people play games on Facebook every month
More than 130 games on Facebook have more than 1 million monthly active users.
More than 4,500 timeline apps have launched since f8 in September 2011.

Those numbers mean that Apple and Google will both have to start being a little extra nice to Facebook. Clearly Facebook love is driving the success of a lot of apps.

Facebook’s app center will highlight apps based on different genres. Ranging from Games, Lifestyle, Entertainment, Mobile Apps and Web apps. Apps will alert as to what information they will have access to when users will download them.
