Facebook pulls creepy Find Friends Nearby feature

by Jun 26, 2012

Yesterday, there were reports that Facebook had added a new feature to its services called Find Friends Nearby which would let users on mobile and web connect with people who had opened the page and were close by. Creepiness of the feature aside, it seems for now Facebook has decided to pull the feature.

According to TechCrunch, Facebook responded to them saying “We are constantly testing new features but have nothing more to share at this time.”

The feature was working on both Android and iOS apps. Users had to go to the app, click on menu and then the Find Friends tab. The Find Friends Nearby feature was accessible in that tab. Users on desktop/website had to go to URL www.facebook.com/ffn  to access the feature.

According to ABC, this is what Facebook had to say in a formal statement:

“This wasn’t a formal release – this was something that a few engineers were testing. With all tests, some get released as full products, others don’t.

So it looks like Facebook’s find friends nearby feature was just a beta test for now. Bad luck all you online stalkers who had just been given a new tool…. maybe the next feature will help you.
