BRASILIA Brazil held 10 presumed Islamist militants in isolation cells at a maximum security jail on Friday as police combed their computers and mobile phones for information about possible threats to next month's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil's Justice Minister Alexandre Moraes said after the arrests on Thursday that the men formed a disorganized group of "amateurs" who contacted each other via social media and had little clue of how to become terrorists. His statements, however, did not go down well at ABIN, Brazil's intelligence agency, or the Federal Police, where sources told Reuters the minister had underplayed the terrorist threat by portraying the group as a bunch of crazy young men #Sports #United States #Islam #markets #Security #Paraguay

Erdogan announces army overhaul in latest post-coup shakeup | Reuters

ANKARA Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan pledged to overhaul the army in response to last week's failed coup, a sign that a newly imposed state of emergency would be used to press on with a purge that has alarmed the West. In a sign of Turkey's dismissal of outside criticism over how it has responded to the coup, the justice minister said Turkey would not bow to pressure from the European Union to rule out restoring the death penalty to execute the plotters. Western countries backed Turkey's government during last week's failed putsch, but are increasingly worried about Turkey's subsequent crackdown against thousands of members of the security forces, judiciary, civil service and academia. #India #Business #Middle East #Security #Turkey #article

Turkey says no return to past repression despite state of emergency | Reuters

ISTANBUL/ANKARA Turkey sought to assure its citizens and the outside world on Thursday that there would be no return to the deep repression of the past, even as President Tayyip Erdogan imposed the first nationwide state of emergency since the 1980s. With authorities cracking down on tens of thousands of people in the judiciary, education, military and civil service after last weekend's failed military coup, a lawmaker from the main opposition party said the state of emergency created "a way of ruling that paves the way for abuse". #Syria #Middle East #Education #markets #Crime #Security #graphics
