Journalists and staff were allowed back on to the grounds some time later but a partial lockdown of the northwest side of the building remained in place. Kiev, rebels agree to extra measures to ensure Ukraine ceasefire

MINSK (Reuters) ProRussian separatists and representatives from Kiev and Moscow agreed on Saturday on further measures to ensure a ceasefire between Ukrainian troops and proRussian separatists. Part of White House evacuated; Obama not present witnesses

WASHINGTON (Reuters) White House staff and reporters were evacuated on Friday night by the Secret Service because an intruder was spotted running on the grounds of the complex shortly after President Barack Obama had left the building, witnesses said. Obama had just left aboard the Marine One helicopter for Camp David, the presidential retreat in nearby Maryland, when armed, uniformed Secret Service personnel ordered the press corps and members of the White House staff to evacuate. #content #wcnts #wcntn #typeof-social #cookie #values #rco #aut #rch #typeof-registered #cnt

Catalonia call independence vote despite Scottish 'no'

BARCELONA (Reuters) The leader of Spain's Catalonia region said on Friday he would defy Madrid to hold a nonbinding independence vote in less than two months, saying his people deserved the same right to determine their future as Scots who voted to stay in Britain. With its own language and culture, and a longstanding proindependence movement that has gathered momentum in recent years of economic hardship, Catalonia has sought a referendum on independence similar to the one held in Scotland on Thursday. #Yahoo! #wcnts #wcntn #cookie #values #rco #aut #rch #typeof-registered

Kurds issue call to arms as Islamic State gains in Syria

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Islamic State fighters besieged a Kurdish city in northern Syria on Thursday after seizing 21 villages in a major assault, prompting a call to arms from Kurds in neighbouring Turkey who urged followers to go and help resist the group's advance. The attack on the city of Ayn al-Arab, known as Kobani in Kurdish, came two days after the top U.S. military officer said the Syrian opposition would probably need the help of the Syrian Kurds to defeat Islamic State. #Yahoo! #content #wcntn #undefined #cookie #values #rco #aut #rch #typeof-registered #cnt
