C.African Republic fighters attack church sheltering civilians

BANGUI (Reuters) - Rebel fighters and armed Muslim civilians killed "many" people in an attack on a church compound in the Central African Republic on Monday where thousands of civilians had taken refuge, Catholic Church officials said. The attack in Bambari, 380 km (236 miles) northwest of the capital Bangui, came just a day before French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian was due to visit the town, where a grenade attack injured seven French soldiers last week. #facebook #United States #Japan #Brazil #Technology #Middle East #Mexico #Muslim

Iraq's Maliki rejects pressure to give up premiership

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki refused on Friday to give up his quest for a third term in power, defying a chorus of critics demanding his replacement as the country faces an existential threat from Islamist insurgents. Maliki has come under mounting pressure since militants of the group now calling itself the Islamic State rampaged through swathes of the country last month and declared a mediaeval-style caliphate on land they have captured in Iraq and neighbouring Syria. "I will never give up my candidacy for the post of prime minister," Maliki said in a statement read out on state television by an announcer #United States #Army #Government #Muslim #FACE #city #town #Sunni #iraqi #minister-nuri

Defiant Al Jazeera faces conservative backlash after Arab Spring

DOHA (Reuters) - Al Jazeera, the Qatari-funded television station whose reporting of the 2011 Arab Spring uprisings won it millions of viewers in the Middle East, is defiant following a backlash by Arab governments that accuse it of supporting Islamists. On June 23, three Al Jazeera journalists were sentenced by an Egyptian court for up to 10 years in jail for aiding a "terrorist organisation" - a reference to the Muslim Brotherhood that helped sweep Hosni Mubarak from power in 2011 only to be ousted itself last year in an army-backed coup. The ruling reflected the misfortunes of the Muslim Brotherhood - in retreat across much of the Middle East after the Arab Spring turned into sectarian war - and was equally a blow to Al Jazeera and its patron Qatar #facebook #India #France #Arabic #Middle East #Russia #Argentina #United Kingdom #Mexico #Muslim #opinion #network
