Singapore says citizens participate in Syria conflict

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A handful of Singaporean citizens have gone to Syria to participate in the conflict there, raising concern about a terrorist threat in the city-state, a senior government official was quoted by a state-owned TV network as saying. As Sunni Islamist rebels surge into Iraq from Syria, security officials in Southeast Asia and Australia worry that the conflict is radicalising a new generation of militants, who are being influenced to an unprecedented degree by social media #facebook #India #Japan #Syria #Brazil #France #Russia #Italy #Argentina #Entertainment #Mexico #city

Pushed from Slaviansk, Ukraine rebels barricade Donetsk

DONETSK Ukraine (Reuters) - Pro-Russian rebels erected new barricades on the streets of Donetsk on Monday, preparing to make a stand in the city of a million people after losing their bastion in the town of Slaviansk in the worst defeat of their three-month uprising. Occasional bursts of gunfire could be heard in the distance from the centre of Donetsk, where residents said they were now living in fear of a potential battle between government forces and the separatist gunmen now out in force #facebook #France #Russia #Argentina #United Kingdom #Ukraine #opinion #city

Iraq's Maliki rejects pressure to give up premiership

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki refused on Friday to give up his quest for a third term in power, defying a chorus of critics demanding his replacement as the country faces an existential threat from Islamist insurgents. Maliki has come under mounting pressure since militants of the group now calling itself the Islamic State rampaged through swathes of the country last month and declared a mediaeval-style caliphate on land they have captured in Iraq and neighbouring Syria. "I will never give up my candidacy for the post of prime minister," Maliki said in a statement read out on state television by an announcer #United States #Army #Government #Muslim #FACE #city #town #Sunni #iraqi #minister-nuri

Mass Hong Kong protest looms as democracy push gathers steam

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong is bracing for its largest protest in more than a decade after nearly 800,000 voted for full democracy in an unofficial referendum, a move likely to stoke anti-China sentiment in the former British colony. The annual July 1 rally, marking the day the territory returned to China in 1997, will focus on pressuring Beijing's Communist Party leaders for full electoral freedom, organisers said, and could draw the largest turnout since 2003, when half a million people demonstrated against proposed anti-subversion laws which were later scrapped. Several groups have indicated they will stage overnight vigils after the march in a possible prelude to a planned campaign to shut down the city's financial district #facebook #India #China #Technology #France #Russia #Italy #Mexico #city
