Hong Kong recalls Tiananmen killings, China muffles dissent

BEIJING (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of people held a candlelight vigil in Hong Kong on Wednesday to mark the bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protesters 25 years ago in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, while mainland China authorities sought to whitewash the 1989 event. In Beijing, police flooded the streets around the square, scene of the worst of the violence a quarter of a century ago, and censors scrubbed the Internet clean of any mention of the rare open display of defiance against the Communist Party #United States #Business #Technology #France #Middle East #Russia #Apple #markets #United Kingdom #Latin America #Mexico #opinion

NATO commander accuses Russia of destabilising eastern Ukraine

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO's top military commander accused Russia on Wednesday of destabilising eastern Ukraine through the use of Russian-backed forces and demanded that it stop interfering. While a majority of the troops Russia had close to the Ukrainian border - previously estimated by NATO at 40,000 - had withdrawn or were in the process of withdrawing, some appeared intent on staying, U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove, NATO's supreme allied commander Europe, said #facebook #India #Brazil #Arabic #Middle East #Apple #markets #Argentina #Ukraine #opinion

Pakistan's biggest city shuts down as protests over politician's UK arrest spread

KARACHI Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistan's biggest city was in lockdown for a second day on Wednesday, with shops and markets closed and people staying home for fear of violence following the arrest in London of one of the country's most feared men. Altaf Hussain, leader of the powerful Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) party and wanted in Pakistan in relation to a murder case, was arrested in northwest London where he has lived in self-imposed exile since the early 1990s. Karachi, a sprawling and violent port city of 18 million, is virtually controlled by Hussain's party, and reports of sporadic violence emerged as soon as news of his arrest reached the city #United States #China #Technology #Arabic #Russia #Apple #markets #Argentina #Latin America #Mexico

Fighting rages in eastern Ukraine town, residents flee

NEAR SLAVIANSK Ukraine (Reuters) - Ukrainian government forces battled separatists with artillery and automatic weapons on Wednesday as fighting raged for a second straight day in and around the eastern town of Slaviansk, forcing many frightened residents to flee. The Kiev government, trying to break rebellions by pro-Russia militias which it fears could lead to dismemberment of the country, said more than 300 rebels had been killed in the past 24 hours in the "anti-terrorist operation" centred on the town, a strategically located separatist stronghold #India #China #Brazil #Apple #markets #Argentina #russian #opinion #fighting

West prods Iran to speed up cooperation with IAEA inquiry

VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran faced Western pressure on Wednesday to speed up its promised cooperation with a long-stalled U.N. nuclear watchdog investigation into suspected atomic bomb research by Tehran, something the Islamic state denies. The United States, the European Union and others welcomed at a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency signs that Iran has begun engaging with the IAEA inquiry but they also made clear Tehran must do much more to fully address their concerns #facebook #China #Business #Brazil #Arabic #Russia #Apple #markets #Latin America #Entertainment #Mexico
