Burundi police fire teargas, beat anti-president protesters| Reuters

BUJUMBURA Burundi police on Tuesday fired teargas and beat protesters demanding President Pierre Nkurunziza end his bid for a third term next month, in a resurgence of unrest that has stoked fears of ethnic conflict in Africa's Great Lakes. A Reuters photographer said at least eight of the flag-waving and chanting demonstrators were dragged off by police. Some in the crowd responded by pelting officers with stones and rocks. #India #Technology #Middle East #South Africa #Italy #United Kingdom #Copyright #Latin America

South Africa delays deportation of 200 foreigners after protests| Reuters

JOHANNESBURG South Africa temporarily halted the deportation of 200 foreigners on Tuesday after a legal challenge by a human rights group, which said authorities were unfairly targeting them following anti-migrant riots in which seven people were killed. More than 800 undocumented migrants have been arrested across South Africa in the past three weeks under "Operation Fiela", a series of raids launched after last month's violence which was centred on the province of KwaZulu Natal. #Business #Sports #Technology #markets #South Africa #Africa #United Kingdom #Copyright #Entertainment #opinion #lifestyle

Drought-hit Southern Africa at risk of food shortage - WFP| Reuters

JOHANNESBURG Southern Africa faces possible food shortages over the next few months due to a severe drought in the 'maize belt' of South Africa, where a lack of rain had caused crop failure rates of over 50 percent, the World Food Programme (WFP) said on Monday. In South Africa, the WFP said maize production was estimated to have dropped by a third compared with last year, putting it on track for a harvest of 9.665 million tonnes, its worst in eight years. #Sports #United States #India #Technology #France #markets #South Africa #Zimbabwe #opinion #lifestyle

South Africa police fire rubber bullets to disperse power protesters| Reuters

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African police fired rubber bullets on Wednesday to disperse angry demonstrators who set tires alight while protesting against what they called the unaffordable electricity prices of state utility Eskom, a Reuters witness said. The police moved in after residents barricaded streets in Johannesburg's sprawling township of Soweto with large rocks to show their grievance over a new payment system they say has sent electricity costs soaring. How I grew up with the 'unbreakable' Nelson Mandela, sitting miles away

I just want to reminisce about growing up with Mandela. His name was a plank on which we rested many fond hopes for a better world. He always seemed solid. Unbreakable. #InMemoriam #South Africa #Nelson Mandela #African National Congress #anti-apartheid struggle
