Brazil Supreme Court removes lower house speaker Cunha | Reuters

BRASILIA Brazil's Supreme Court removed the speaker of the lower house of Congress on Thursday on charges of obstructing a corruption investigation, days before an impeachment process that he engineered was expected to oust President Dilma Rousseff. The removal of Eduardo Cunha, a bitter rival of Rousseff and one of Brazil's most divisive public figures, was the latest in a series of political earthquakes in South America's largest country as it struggles with a sweeping corruption scandal and the worst recession in decades. The Supreme Court voted unanimously to approve a request by Brazil's top prosecutor to strip Cunha of his influential post for allegedly intimidating lawmakers and obstructing an investigation into accusations that he held undeclared bank accounts in Switzerland. #Politics #Economy #India #Middle East #United Kingdom #Entertainment

Iraqi PM vows to prevent another Green Zone breach, sacks security chief | Reuters

BAGHDAD Iraq's prime minister vowed on Thursday to prevent another breach of Baghdad's Green Zone, hours before a planned protest by followers of a senior Shi'ite cleric, hundreds of whom stormed the fortified complex last week. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's promise came just a day after he sacked Green Zone security chief, Lieutenant-General Mohammed Ridha, replacing him with Major General Kareem Abboud al-Tamimi, sources said. Ridha had appeared in videos kissing Sadr's hand as he entered Baghdad's Green Zone and began a sit-in in March. #Politics #Middle East #markets #United Kingdom #crisis #Green

Spain gears up for repeat election on June 26 | Reuters

MADRID Spain's King Felipe dissolved parliament on Tuesday and called a new national election for June 26 after a vote in December left such a fractured political landscape that no government could be formed. The new vote follows four months of fruitless coalition talks between Spain's four main parties after the inconclusive ballot stripped the conservative People's Party (PP) of acting prime minister Mariano Rajoy of its majority. The re-run is not expected to herald a major shift in voting patterns, opinion polls show, likely forcing bickering leaders to once again try to forge a coalition #Politics #Business #Health #Argentina #United Kingdom
