Jakarta governor slips in polls after hardline Islamist protest | Reuters

By Bernadette Christina Munthe | JAKARTA JAKARTA The governor of Indonesia's capital Jakarta, the first ethnic Chinese and Christian in the job, is losing support in his bid for reelection as allegations that he insulted the Koran increasingly put off Muslim voters. An opinion poll published on Thursday showed support for Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, also known as "Ahok", plunged from 60 percent in March to 25 percent in the latest survey. Over 100,000 Muslims marched through Jakarta last week to demand his resignation and urge voters not to re-elect him in February, raising concerns over the rise of hardline Islamists in the world's largest Muslim-majority nation.Last month's survey by pollster Lingkaran Survei Indonesia, taken before the protest, showed him at 31 percent support."The controversy over the comments on the Koran is a factor affecting his electability and resistance is rising against a non-Muslim leader," said Adjie Alfaraby of LSI. The vast majority of Indonesians practice a moderate form of Islam and faith is not often a determining factor in elections, especially in a cosmopolitan city like Jakarta. #United States #Islam #Middle East #United Kingdom #Entertainment #Muslim #article

Egyptian judge who tried Mursi survives assassination attempt | Reuters

CAIRO An Egyptian judge who tried former president Mohamed Mursi in 2015 survived an assassination attempt on Friday when a parked car exploded as his vehicle drove by, the Interior Ministry said. The target was Judge Ahmed Aboul Fotouh, who presides over a felony court in a district of Cairo. The blast caused no injuries, the ministry said in a statement.Judges, policemen and other senior officials have increasingly been targeted by radical Islamists angered by the hefty prison sentences imposed on members of the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.A newly-emerged militant group, the Hasam Movement, claimed responsibility for Friday's bombing, which occurred in the eastern Cairo neighbourhood of Nasr City."The Hasam Movement's central bombing squad targeted the regime's dog and one of hell's judges Ahmed Aboul Fotouh using a car bomb near his house," the group said in a statement."To every unjust judge you still have a chance to think it through and leave this dirty swamp that is unfairly referred to as the judiciary." Aboul Fotouh was one of three judges on a panel that in April 2015 sentenced Mursi, also a senior official in the Brotherhood, to 20 years in jail after finding him guilty of inciting violence that led to the death of 10 people in clashes with security forces in December 2012. #Business #Islam #Middle East #markets #Africa #Violence #Muslim

Lebanon's Hariri named new PM, wins speaker's support | Reuters

By Tom Perry and Laila Bassam | BEIRUT BEIRUT Lebanon's president asked Sunni leader Saad al-Hariri to form a new government on Thursday, after he won the support of a majority of MPs including the influential parliament speaker who said he would cooperate with efforts to set up the new cabinet.Hariri's nomination is part of a political deal that resulted in the election of Christian leader Michel Aoun, a close ally of the Iran-backed group Hezbollah, as head of state on Monday, ending a 2-1/2 year long presidential vacuum.A big concession on the part of Hariri, the deal has underscored Hezbollah's dominant position in Lebanon and the diminished role of Hariri's main regional backer, Saudi Arabia, which appears more focused on confronting Iranian influence elsewhere in the region. The quick formation of a new administration with cross-party support will help revive government in a country where political conflict has paralysed decision-making, economic development and basic services, and raised fears for its stability. The central bank governor said Aoun's election and the formation of a government would boost confidence in the economy and attract foreign aid: Lebanon is hosting some 1.5 million refugees from the war in neighbouring Syria.Hariri, 46, said he aimed for the quick formation of a government of "national accord".Speaking at the presidency, he said "we owe it to the Lebanese to start working as soon as possible to protect our country from the flames burning around it, to reinforce its immunity in the face of terrorism". Lebanon has been buffeted by instability from the war in neighbouring Syria, where Hezbollah is fighting in support of President Bashar al-Assad. #Economy #Syria #Government #markets #Muslim
