Eyeing 2015 election, UK's Labour pledges rise in minimum wage

MANCHESTER England (Reuters) Britain's opposition Labour party promised on Sunday to raise the national minimum wage by more than 25 percent within five years if it wins next year's national election, a pledge designed to win over voters hit by rising living costs. Earnings in Britain have lagged behind inflation since the 2008 financial crisis. The rising cost of everything from gas to train tickets has shot up the political agenda since the return of economic growth forced Labour to shift its line of attack on the Conservativeled government ahead of the May 2015 vote. #India #Arabic #Middle East #Russia #markets #United Kingdom #Mexico #opinion #conservatives

Afghan election body names exfinance minister Ghani presidentelect

KABUL (Reuters) Afghanistan's election commission declared former finance minister Ashraf Ghani as the warravaged country's presidentelect on Sunday after an acrimonious dispute over fraud, but did not give the final vote tally after a U.N.monitory audit. The announcement came hours after Ghani and rival, Abdullah Abdullah, signed a powersharing agreement to end two months of bitter wrangling over accusations of fraud that undermined confidence in the election and emboldened the Taliban insurgency at a crucial time as most foreign troops prepare to leave #Politics #Business #Brazil #Arabic #markets #Argentina #United Kingdom #Latin America #Election #Mexico #opinion

Defeated nationalist leader says Scots 'tricked' out of independence

MANCHESTER England (Reuters) Alex Salmond, the defeated leader of Scotland's nationalists, on Sunday accused Prime Minister David Cameron and other London politicians of tricking Scottish voters out of independence by making a false "vow" about granting them new powers. Salmond, who is stepping down as leader of the proindependence Scottish National Party (SNP) after spearheading a failed campaign for Scotland to leave the United Kingdom, said Britain's three main political parties had won last Thursday's referendum vote by 5545 percent by deception. "I think the vow was something cooked up in desperation for the last few days of the campaign and I think everyone in Scotland now realises that," said Salmond, referring to a pledge made by Cameron and other leaders two days before the referendum to rapidly expand Scottish autonomy in the event of a "No" vote #facebook #China #Japan #Brazil #Technology #France #Arabic #markets #Latin America #Mexico
