Ex-Soviet minister and Georgia leader Shevardnadze dies

TBILISI (Reuters) - Eduard Shevardnadze, who as Soviet Foreign Minister helped bring down the Berlin Wall and end the Cold War, died on Monday after a long illness. Shevardnadze, who was 86, went on to lead his native Georgia in the stormy early years after independence before being ousted in street protests. NATO will not offer Georgia membership step, avoiding Russia clash

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO will stop short of approving a formal step to membership for Georgia at its summit in September, officials said on Wednesday, dodging a possible confrontation with Moscow over the alliance's expansion to Russia's neighbours. NATO members agreed in principle to draw up a "substantive package" of cooperation with Georgia that would help it move closer to NATO, Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told reporters at a meeting of alliance foreign ministers. #facebook #United States #India #Business #Arabic #Middle East #Russia #Argentina #Mexico #Georgia #opinion

NATO says seeking closer ties with Georgia as Ukraine crisis mounts

TBILISI (Reuters) - NATO said on Thursday it was looking at ways to bring Georgia "even closer" to the military alliance, in the latest signal of support for the former Soviet republic as tension mounts between Russia and the West over Ukraine. James Appathurai, NATO Special Representative for the Caucasus, said he would not let Russia's words or actions influence the final decision on whether to make Georgia a full member, a likely reference to Moscow's opposition to the move. #facebook #India #Business #Brazil #markets #Argentina #Latin America #Mexico #Ukraine #Georgia #opinion
