Egyptian appeals court cancels five-year jail terms for 47 over island protests | Reuters

CAIRO An Egyptian appeals court on Tuesday cancelled five-year prison terms handed to 47 people earlier this month for protesting a government decision to transfer two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia, judicial sources said. A lower misdemeanours court had sentenced them to five years in prison and a fine of 100,000 Egyptian pounds ($11,261.39) each on May 14 for demonstrating against President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's decision to hand over Tiran and Sanafir islands. The appeals court voided the jail sentences but kept the fines. #Egypt #Middle East #Crime #United Kingdom #Foreign policy #article

Egypt finds human remains and belongings from plane crash at sea | Reuters

CAIRO Egypt said on Friday its navy had found human remains, wreckage and the personal belongings of passengers floating in the Mediterranean, confirmation that an EgyptAir jet had plunged into the sea with 66 people on board. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi offered condolences for those on board, amounting to Egypt's official acknowledgement of their deaths, although there was still no explanation of why the Airbus had crashed. "The Egyptian navy was able to retrieve more debris from the plane, some of the passengers' belongings, human remains, and plane seats," the Civil Aviation Ministry said in a statement. #United States #Egypt #Middle East #markets #Argentina
