West Indies 19-0
Gayle 8, Samuels 9
It started off with a six from Gayle’s bat (on a no-ball) and it ended with a six from Samuels. Southee also gave away a wide under pressure and the Windies will take this one. New Zealand’s World T20 is over.
New Zealand 17-0
Taylor 13, McCullum 1
Taylor leads from the front. He paddle sweeps a boundary and thumps a full-toss for a huge six over the on-side. Add to that a wide and a leg-bye and New Zealand have scored 17 in the super over.
WICKET! New Zealand 138-6 after 20 overs
Doug Bracewell run out 1 (1b, 0×4, 0×6)
Tell you what! New Zealand have taken this match to the super over. A wide, a misfield and a six from skipper Taylor has given New Zealand hope in a match which they should have otherwise won easily.
WICKET! New Zealand 125-6 after 18.3 overs
Nathan McCullum c Charles b Narine 5 (7b, 0×4, 0×6)
Pressure tells as New Zealand’s batsmen try and throw their bat at everything. McCullum did so too and has found the fielder at deep mid-wicket. They need 15 from 9 balls now.
WICKET! New Zealand 115-5 after 16.4 overs
Jacob Oram lbw b Narine 6 (9b, 0×4, 0×6)
Oram’s also been done in with the carrom ball. Narine smacks his pads with his special delivery and Oram, with a shake of the head, departs LBW.
WICKET! New Zealand 85-4 after 13 overs
James Franklin c Gayle b Narine 14 (14b, 1×4, 0×6)
Excellent fielding from Gayle. Narine’s carrom ball works and Franklin’s edge just carries to big West Indian at first slip.
New Zealand 78-3 after 12 overs
Taylor 17, Franklin 12
Franklin and Taylor are trying to build a quick partnership and it has worked so far. While Franklin has rapped two fours, skipper Taylor has just hit Gayle out of the park in supreme style.
WICKET! New Zealand 52-3 after 9 overs
Martin Guptill c Samuels b Sammy 21 (27b, 2×4, 0×6)
Are the Kiwis struggling now? Yes, a little bit. West Indies have done what Pakistan couldn’t do against India last night. They have capitalised on the early wicket of Nicol and cramped the Kiwis in a corner. Pressure has paid off as Guptill cuts one straight to point.
WICKET! New Zealand 41-2 after 7.2 overs
Brendon McCullum b Badree 22 (18b, 3×4, 0×6)
Typical T20 bowled. McCullum comes forward in an attempt to hit it through the covers, misses and the stumps are gone.
New Zealand 25-1 after 5 overs
Guptill 11, McCullum 10
McCullum has taken no time to adjust… he’s already clobbered a couple of fours— one down the ground and the other past fine leg. Guptill has also pulled away a four.
WICKET! New Zealand 8-1 after 2.2 overs
Rob Nicol lbw b Rampaul 3 (5b, 0×4, 0×6)
Gone! Rampaul’s bowls a straight line but Nicol shifts towards the off-stump to steer it away towards leg and the umpire’s given it.
New Zealand 4-0 after 1 over
Guptill 2, Nicol 2
Slow and steady wins the race. Okay, we’re saying that a bit early, but that’s what NZ have done in the first over. Obviously they put themselves in trouble if they lose early wickets.
NEW ZEALAND COME OUT TO BAT
WICKET! West Indies 139 all out after 19.3 overs
Samuel Badree b Oram 1 (4b, 0×4, 0×6)
That’s it then. Badree is bowled and the Windies fold for a total which was far less than what they should have got after their fine start. After the fall of Gayle, they never really looked like bouncing back. Great chance for the Kiwis to stay in the tournament.
WICKET! West Indies 136-9 after 18.3 overs
Sunil Narine b Southee 3 (4b, 0×4, 0×6)
Slower delivery from Southee and Narine’s completely missed. Easy for NZ now.
WICKET! West Indies 133-8 after 17.5 overs
Kieron Pollard c Taylor b Bracewell 28 (22b, 3×4, 0×6)
With Pollard at the crease, the Windies had some hope of getting to 150, but are now in danger of being bowled out. His attempt to clear the offside has failed and Taylor’s taken a high well judged catch.
WICKET! West Indies 123-7 after 17 overs
Darren Sammy c Franklin b Southee 11 (12b 1×4 0×6)
To be honest, the scoring was ridiculously slow and Sammy was getting impatient. He pulls it and it’s well taken at deep mid-wicket.
WICKET! West Indies 102-6 after 13.2 overs
Denesh Ramdin c Taylor b Hira 1 (2b, 0×4, 0×6)
Another wicket! Hira invites the drive from Ramdin and he’s driven it straight to Taylor at short mid-off. Simple.
WICKET! West Indies 98-5 after 12.5 overs
Darren Bravo b NL McCullum 16 (21b, 0×4, 1×6)
There’s nothing wrong with the number of runs the Windies have scored, but they’re losing wickets at constant intervals. Bravo tries to divert it past the wicket-keeper but misses and the stumps are disturbed.
WICKET! West Indies 87-4 after 10.4 overs
Marlon Samuels c Southee b NL McCullum 24 (22b, 2×4, 1×6)
Samuels had begun to hit a few boundaries now and gets a bit greedy. He tries to clear the bowler and get six down the ground, but Southee runs onto it and takes it comfortably.
West Indies 65-3 after 8 overs
Samuels 14, Bravo 3
No entertainment batting-wise since Gayle’s dismissal. Ronnie Hira has been introduced to the attack and his first over costs just one run. Fine start for the man who replaced Vettori in the side.
WICKET! West Indies 61-3 after 6.2 overs
Chris Gayle c McCullum b Southee 30 (14b, 3×4, 2×6)
Commentator’s curse? Gayle had just started to dominate when Southee cuts one away from the batsman and Gayle’s nick carries to McCullum. NZ erupt… they know they’ve taken a special wicket.
West Indies 60-2 after 6 overs
Gayle 30, Samuels 5
Oram gives away a free-hit and guess who’s on strike? Yes, it’s Gayle and he’s hammered the low full-toss for six. Samuels then picks up a slower ball early and heaves it over long-on for six more. Windies scoring freely.
WICKET! West Indies 36-2 after 3.5 overs
Andre Russell c Franklin b Bracewell 6 (6b, 0×4, 1×6)
We’ve seen it happen so many times in T20 cricket. Russell slaps a six over the bowler and then there’s a change of pace which deceives him. He flicks it straight to short fine-leg.
West Indies 30-1 after 3 overs
Gayle 21, Russell 0
Two fours and a six and that should mean Gayle’s warm up is over. Two full deliveries from Mills have been put away over the bowler’s head. The third boundary was a fine punch through the covers.
WICKET! West Indies 14-1 after 1.5 overs
Johnson Charles c & b Bracewell 8 (9b, 2×4, 0×6)
If it was a bad start for Mills, it’s been a great one for Bracewell. Yes, he does allow Gayle to smack one off his pads for four, but he then picks up Charles’ wicket. Charles was looking a bit tight and he’s out for a soft dismissal.
West Indies 9-0 after 1 over
Gayle 0, Charles 8
Bad start from Mills as he oversteps and awards a run and a free-hit to Charles. Nothing comes off the free-hit, but Charles plays a lovely four through the point region after edging through the slips to take his score to 8.
