Watch: Cricketwallah Ayaz Memon analyses IPL 2017 opener and previews the weekend double headers

It's the start of another season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and we have renowned cricket journalist Ayaz Memon discussing the opening two matches and also previewing those in the weekend, in our show, Firstpost Gameplan. Sunrisers Hyderabad started their title defence in style, cruising past Royal Challengers Bangalore in the first match, with Yuvraj Singh playing a blinder of an innings.

Mumbai Indians started on the wrong foot, losing their first match like they have been doing since 2013. Pune captain Steve Smith continued his red hot recent form, but what hurt Mumbai was their sloppy fielding, that saw them drop both Smith and MS Dhoni. Imran Tahir proved he was too good a bowler to have been ignored in the auctions.

Coming to the big match this evening – Kolkata Knight Riders take on Gujarat Lions away. The big headache for KKR would be to find a replacement for Andre Russell, who is out with a suspension. All eyes will also be on Trent Boult, who could be a great weapon for Kolkata at the start of the innings and at the 'death'. For Gujarat, the big batters – Brendon McCullum, Suresh Raina, Aaron Finch – will have to fire, though the bowling looks a bit thin with Ravindra Jadeja, particularly, out of action.

Saturday would see a double header, with Kings XI Punjab opening their campaign against Rising Pune Supergiant and Delhi Daredevils facing RCB. On Sunday, Sunrisers Hyderabad would take on Gujarat Lions, while Mumbai would be up against KKR at the Wankhede in what promises to be a humdinger of a contest.
