Tennis fiasco played on our minds at Olympics: Bhupathi

by Sep 19, 2012

Many things were said at Mahesh Bhupathi’s press conference today , and one of the things he mentioned was the fact that next year will be his last on tour.

“Because I’m getting old,” joked Bhupathi on being asked why he had taken the decision.

Bhupathi fears he has played his last match for India. Reuters

But after the press conference, Firstpost had a chance to prod him on the decision. We asked him whether the Olympics selection fiasco and the debacle in London was one of the reasons he decided to retire.

“No,” came the prompt reply after which he said, “I took the decision two years back.”

Bhupathi and his spat with the AITA is now out in the open for everyone to see and it certainly played on the minds of India’s pair in London.

But Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna crashed out early from the US Open, which was soon after the Olympics. So, was the drama affecting him in New York too?

“There was pressure in London at the Olympics, but not in New York… in New York, we just played a bad match,” he said.

Listen to what Bhupathi had to say in our video.
