Santos deny Man United made £38 million bid for Neymar

Sep 5, 2012

Manchester United have pulled off crazier transfers before, but a coup for Neymar could have been quite something.

A report in The Sun says that Alex Ferguson was ready to part with £38 million for the Brazilian sensation— which would be a record deal since United paid £30.75 million for Dimitar Berbatov's transfer from Tottenham Hotspur.

It would have, in all probability, hamper Nani's future at the club.

It was also reported that the 20-year-old Santos star declined the move, saying that he wanted to stay at the club till the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

United were also linked with Lucas Moura's £32 million transfer, but high-spending PSG eventually bought him.

Neymar had an excellent Olympics tournament, scoring three goals in Brazil's bid for gold.

One can never be sure whether there was a bid from United, and this Sky Sports report quotes Santos's Director of Football as denying the bid: "I have no idea where that came from, but it's not true," he quipped.

Either way, it will be interesting to see whether United go for him in the January transfer window.
